Lindsay Bentis – Artist Statement
My work has been a constant process of change and exploration that began with love and admiration for the beauty and ugliness of the natural world. While painting landscapes, I gradually became more intrigued with the many tiny pieces that made up the landscape rather than with the whole vast space. The underlying structure of nature became the focus of the paintings, breaking down the forms to creatures and associations of the landscape until these abstract ideas became the entire picture themselves. I have been working with oil paint on wood for many years, but recently have begun involving other materials such as ink, yarn, string, wax and encaustic paint (beeswax and pigment). The materials themselves inspire much of the work, and with their own innate beauty, I try to express the textures, colors, and contours of our environment.
