Kathy Knebel – Artist Statement

Where Nik Bsullak uses “artifacts” found in the environment for her painting, I have used “studio artifacts” along with sea glass to mirror her composition. Copper scraps result from my ongoing fascination with its various forms…wire, tacks, and mesh which patina to blues, greens and rich dark shades, and the pigments in my encaustic paints which are copper based.

In “Cabinet #387” a sea of blue-green encaustic supports the sea glass found on the Mendocino Coast of California, which I imagine mirrors the rugged coast of Maine. As shapes of my painting mirror shapes of Nik Bsullak’s found treasures, old contrasts with new, shiny with patina. Over time, the copper oddments will join Nik Bsullak’s sculptures of artifacts with the preciousness time brings.
