Encaustic Monotype Class with Paula Roland

February 21-22, 2009 • 10 am-4 pm • $386

Conrad Wilde Gallery welcomes celebrated artist and teacher Paula Roland for a two-day encaustic monotype workshop February 21-22, 2009. The workshop will be held from 10 am-4 pm in the Gallery’s encaustic studios.

The encaustic monotype is an innovative, contemporary process and a painterly approach to printmaking. It combines the ancient medium of encaustic with the popular monotype process. In this method, encaustic sticks (beeswax and pigment in solid form) are used to draw on a heated metal plate. The wax melts instantly and may be manipulated with brushes and other tools. Absorbent paper is laid on the plate, and the image is transferred to the paper by hand. Works may be framed traditionally, or mounted to board and layered with wax medium.

With encaustic monotype, the possibilities are endless, and the results are immediate. Participants will learn to layer for depth, translucency, and blended color; use stencils; use encaustic and mixed media (charcoal, graphite, oil) on paper; create translucent printed and waxed papers; and learn presentation techniques. Roland’s workshops consist of numerous demonstrations and examples of finished work to further illustrate each technique. Ample time is reserved for hands-on skill development.

Roland exhibits and teaches internationally. A former college art professor, Roland has an MFA and began teaching encaustic in 1997. Among her many fellowships and awards is one from the National Endowment for the Arts. She was a key presenter at the National Encaustic Painting Conferences in ‘07 and ‘08 and is included in Joanne Mattera’s The Art of Encaustic Painting…, Linda Womack’s Embracing Encaustic, Installations and Experimental Printmaking (pending), by Alexia Tala, and Lissa Rankin’s Encaustic and Beyond… (pending). Recent exhibitions include “On the Edge: New Works in Encaustic” and a solo show at William Siegal Gallery in Santa Fe, NM. Please contact Conrad Wilde Gallery for registration materials.
