Charyl Weissbach – Artist Statement

I have come to appreciate that my painting capability is to a large part an enhanced form of drawing, a skill that I naturally gravitate toward and continue to explore and refine symbiotically with my evolution as an encaustic painter. The imagery of my work does not accurately represent nature, as we know it. With this, I am able to convey nature’s vastness and mysterious allure, which is a significant theme in my compositions. Therefore, I try to unveil an abstraction of nature’s character, attempting to capture some of its infinite variations of color, shape, and ethereal beauty.

My painting method often involves two diverse approaches in tandem. The first is a more traditional one in which I adhere to the plein air style of painting using oil paint on linen stretched over panel. The second technique is encaustic painting, which is performed in the studio, and involves the use of hot wax and oil pigments. The pigment and wax in combination with resin is applied with a brush, smoothed with a palette knife, or etched and drawn with a heated flow pen onto the surface. Sometimes the wax is poured onto the linen and then fused with heat onto the solid support. By trying to foster this continual dynamic process, I have been able to create a thematic style that depicts different subliminal effects of nature. I adhere to the impressionist style and the hot wax techniques because light, colors, textures, and luminosity that are present in nature are revealed with more intensity using these techniques.

It is my hope that these feelings, which have formed the basis of these encaustic paintings, will be in some way conveyed to those viewing them.
